The Clinical Research POD provides residents interested in a career in clinical research and/or Quality Improvement with intensive mentorship and access to unique educational opportunities. The POD provides a dedicated infrastructure for residents to identify and participate in clinical research and provides access to focused didactic programs, including the intensive 2-week course in Clinical Trials and Research taught by faculty from throughout the Department and University. POD residents co-lead one journal club a year (together with another resident and mentored by a faculty member) and participate in evening didactics, which include sessions on research careers, grants and grant writing, and choosing/cultivating mentorship relationships. Residents also have the opportunity to join the Research Interest Group and grow their programming skills through quarterly Coding Nights.

The Medical Education POD aims to provide residents with the foundational skills needed to be an outstanding medical educator and incorporate education into their future careers. The structure of the POD includes interactive workshops and didactic sessions on topics such as bedside teaching, feedback delivery, curriculum and survey design and development of an education portfolio, among many others. Mentorship is provided for curriculum design and medical education research projects that address educational needs and interventions at all levels of medical training.

The Underserved Populations/Global Health POD is for residents who have an interest in focusing on underserved patient populations, whether domestically or overseas. These residents participate in a host of educational opportunities centered on cultivating diversity, health equity, and inclusivity in health care settings. Opportunities include the 2-week Intensive Global Health Course, the Case-based Tropical Medicine Lecture Series, involvement with the Internal Medicine Health Equity, Advocacy, and Research group (IM-HEARS), Leadership in Advancing Diversity program (LEAD), and more. POD members have the opportunity to meet faculty mentors who prioritize advocacy for healthcare equity, learning through their experiences while gaining leadership skills to promote DEI initiatives throughout their medical careers.
