The popularity of tiny homes is helping to reshape the real estate market, with startups lining up to get a piece of the action.

Now some big retailers are getting in on the tiny-home craze.

Amazon, Home Depot, and Costco are selling kits on their websites that allow do-it-yourselfers to build their own tiny homes, which are usually 600 square feet or less. Retailers are offering some kits for under $50,000, though the steps required to build a house can ratchet up the cost — including paying for building permits and site preparation.

People are flocking to tiny homes for a number of reasons. They promote a minimalist lifestyle, and they can create a sense of community for those living among other tiny-home adopters.

The structures – some of which are classified as accessory dwelling units or ADUs – also may provide affordable housing. California, New York, and Vermont are aiming to alleviate some of the financial burdens of building ADUs through programs to help people cover the cost.

Here's a look at some of the tiny-home structures you can buy at Amazon, Home Depot, and Costco.

Amazon's tiny-home selection has included dozens of structures, including cedar sheds, cabins, and a dome-shaped "Moon House."

The retailer's tiny homes range in cost from around $3,000 to $27,500, and vary in size from single-room studios to three-bedroom units.

The site also offers an assortment of barn-style storage buildings, garages, and sheds without all the bells and whistles of some of the pricier tiny homes. DIYers can buy many of these kits online and have them shipped to their door in a matter of days.

For those looking to spend a little more on ADUs, Home Depot has tiny-home kits that range from $10,000 to $74,000. The lower price range offers single-room structures, advertised for use as sheds, home offices, or guest rooms.

On the higher end, there are structures that feature two floors, including a "Getaway Pad" with an outdoor spiral staircase that costs $44,000.

Other models have designs that evoke a vacation vibe, like this $51,000 yurt cabin or this "Sea Breeze Villa," which costs $34,000.

Costco also offers an assortment of storage sheds or "studio sheds." These smaller structures range in price from around $2,000 to $17,000. These single-room structures could function as storage spaces or as guest bedrooms.

Once delivered, many of these kits arrive ready for assembly, so you'll likely have the tiny structures up in no time.
